Update 26/01/2025
Hello!
Happy New Year and all that.
I know it's been a few months since the last update, but I thought it was about time to drop another, this time rather brief, update on Rising Darkness and the coming Demo.
So, to begin. I originally aimed to have the Demo released in December, but being the naïve so and so that I am, I didn't realise how much work I was going to need to do in UE4. I'll admit, I jumped head first into this with no UE4 experience besides level building, and thought it'd be a lot easier than it is. However, after taking a break in Development over the holidays, just to recoup and get my sh*t together about this game, it's safe to say that I'm back on track.
I've been teaching myself a lot more with UE4. I've been looking at ways to better my game and make improvements into how the game looks and is beginning to run.
With that being said, I've made a few newer decisions over the last couple of months with regards to gameplay and features. So at the launch of the demo, there's only going to be a handful of weapons available. I have previewed some WIP footage of available weapons that will be in the full game, but for the Demo, I'll be narrowing this down to only a handful.
Now, onto the features and gameplay.
Originally, I was going to have an inventory system where you could pick up multiple weapons at once, MedKits, etc, but after giving some thought into what I want my game to be and what it's inspired by, I've decided that I want to keep it "basic". I'm going to be sticking to the classic "Main and Secondary" style of gunplay, where you can pick up and drop weapons from the ground when you run out of ammo. Think Halo, or Call Of Duty.
- MedKits will be collectable only when health has been lost.
- Weapons can be picked up from corpses and replace the ones in your hand/secondary.
- Player will carry 4 grenades and can pick up more when used.
- Player will have a shield that will regenerate (like the Republic Commando game).
The Demo will only feature the first level of the game. Originally it was going to be the entire Prologue of the game that would be playable, but after a lot of reconsideration, I'm going to do things a different way in the long run, which I think will turn out a lot better if done correctly.
A while back I had stated that the story was finished and that I was happy with how it flowed, and whilst this still stands, there are certain aspects of it that from a gameplay point of view, dont make sense. So I'm going to be changing the story a bit to make it flow a lot better and be a lot more fun.
I'll be working on another trailer as the demo eventually comes closer to completion.
BUT ALAS, for now, that's all.
I'll do another update with screenshots and more details in the coming weeks to give more of a preview of how the demo is coming along.
